Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Synopsis On this Friday night, Pierre asks us to consider what criterion Plato is using to reject Homer so frequently in his Republic . Highlights what is going on in books 9 and 10 of Plato’s Republic ? book 10: if Plato is criticizing/rejecting Homer, what is the reason? what kinds of answers truly answer questions? Imitation vs Truth and Virtue What does it take to master Plato? Plato’s criticism of Homer’s view of the gods How does Plato view them? Does he reject only what is being...

Synopsis This Friday night, we continue working on Plato’s Ion with Pierre. Our ‘homework’ for today had been to read (or re-read) book 1 of Plato’s Republic – usually we use the Rouse ( ISBN:978-0451471703 ) or the Balboa – and collect a list of the points made there about what an ‘art’ is, so that we could consider its applicability here in the Ion . Most of Pierre’s questions are below. For more study questions and discussion, please see also our other sessions on the Ion...

Synopsis Continuing on our online meetings, today we review Pierre's “Struggle for Excellence” papers (the June 2004 Athens conference talk and the March 2005 APPA article ), using them to examine Pierre's question to us: Is there or is there not evidence that in Homer's Iliad , Achilles is going through all of the steps that we identify as Philosophical Midwifery? The five “steps”: the present situation that manifested the problem the pathologos state of mind the transmission scene...

Synopsis A Friday-night continuing to explore the autos -- Greek word 'αυτο' (Self) -- in the Iliad, Book 24, their usage, and implications, this time especially with how Self is used with reference to the gods. (Lines 105-198; Fitzgerald pages 571-3) Topic Highlights How are the gods functioning in book 24? Synopsis Our first Saturday Jitsi'ing with Pierre in lieu of Regina's or David's houses - again because of the corona virus. The advantage is that many of our old (but now remote) friends were able to join us. This Saturday, Pierre wanted us to make further progress through Book 24 of Homer's Iliad , continuing to look at the occurrences of the Greek word 'αυτο' (Self), using the Fitzgerald translation and Barbara's retranslations of certain sentences with auto as Self. So Barbara leads us...

Synopsis We continue with Homer's Iliad , Fitzgerald edition, looking at the auto's (Self), with Barbara helping us with her prepared review of these, and how the meaning changes when auto is translated as Self. In particular, today we look at Achilles in the games, after the funeral. In each of these games/contests, Achilles makes a referee judgement. What do each of these judgements mean when they are taken together? What can we say therefore about Achilles and his state of mind? We may also...

Synopsis Pierre leads us through another Friday night, continuing our investigation of how 'properly' translating the 'autos' in Homer's Iliad raises the level of meaning in this work. We are, as usual, indebted to the great work of our own Barbara Stecker, who has identified and listed the locations in Book 23 where the autos occur, and provided possible re-interpretations of these phrases for us to consider. Pierre continues to have us ponder last week's question, but slightly reworded: Why...

Synopsis We continue our study of Homer's Iliad , this week jumping forward to Book 23. Pierre asks us to consider why the Greeks stop to participate in games. Why does Homer include this? We look at the first few occurrences of auto (Self) using the list of Self occurrences that Barbara provided for us (forthcoming). Synopsis Pierre leads the group through the rest of Book 11 of Homer's Iliad , with Barbara's help identifying and re-translating all the places where (αυτο, auto, “Self”) is not translated faithfully by Fitzgerald. Why does every translation of Homer's Iliad (and many other Greek works, including the New Testament)...

Synopsis Tonight in this short talk, Pierre has us focus on only one page (235 in most of the Fitzgerald printings, i.e., lines 145-208) of Book 10 of Homer's Iliad . Barbara has identified four uses of Self (αυτο) in these lines, and she reads the text, replacing the Fitzgerald translation with her own translation of Self (or selves) in these places. Pierre has us consider the difference(s). Is Homer giving the idea of Self an autonomous existence? What kind of a role are selves playing?...

Synopsis We continue with our (re)exploration of Homer's Iliad . This week, we read the Fitzgerald translation of part of Book 9. First we read Achilles' speech, his answer to Odysseus about how he feels about himself and the situation. Then we move on to Lord Phoenix's re-telling of his own raising of Achilles and we take beginning note of how the things that happened to Lord Phoenix match 1-for-1 to the things that happened to Achilles -- an indication of a likely pathologos transmission....

We consider the spiritual meaning of Homer's Iliad with Pierre's careful dialoguing with us, all starting from a question that Maria brought in. Just lovely, lovely philosophy. Keep in mind, as “ransom” is used here, a) it not only has a completely different meaning for the Greeks than for us moderns, but b) also Homer (and Pierre!) take its meaning to an even higher level: The proper/just...

Synopsis Another great Saturday morning coffee with Pierre. Personally, this is my favorite kind of Saturday: No dreams. No degradation into political discussion. Just pure philosophy -- Midwifery/Pathologos, Iliad, Parmenides. Highlights Bradley kicks it off: Why do souls want to identify with (inherently false) images of Self? DarleneA's response (in Pierre's Facebook group) to Pierre's “Letter from Alexandros” with her own dream and questions (see her letter below) Homer's Iliad Are the...

Synopsis In this third Friday in the recent Iliad series, we continue to look (using the Balboa translation ) for occurrences of 'αυτο' (Self) in the text of Book 1 of Homer's Iliad , and consider which of these and which should not be with a capital 'S' (Self). Pierre encourages us to gather now all of these together with the work we have done, and see if we can find a pattern in how Homer is using the idea of Self in the Iliad. Next week we will move on to Book 2 and continue our search....

Synopsis A continuation of last week . Pierre has us go over 2 or 3 quotes in Book 1 of Homer's Iliad, where 'auto' (Self) and 'logos' are used in the Homeric Greek, and asks us to consider: Do these quotes raise the level of reflection and add another dimension to the work? Synopsis Pierre starts us back into Homer's Iliad again. He begins by asking what it is we are looking for in the Iliad? And why did it gain the status among the Greeks of a sacred scripture? He has us think about focusing on the turn-about of Achilles, the roles of gods and men, and the significance, if any, of the idea of self, myself, selves, etc. It is on this last point that we spend most of the session, collecting all the quotes (from the Balboa translation) where self ('αυτο') is...

Synopsis Another great Saturday morning having coffee with Pierre and a few members of the NS. I did not have energy to set up the camera today, so it was again audio-only. I did snap a couple of photos (in the JPEG section of the Download Options menu of this page). Today, uncharacteristically, we explored no dreams. So room was left open to philosophical discussion -- of which there was a great deal. Also, uncharacteristically, we went out to 4 hours (from 10 'til 2) -- the longest Saturday...
